Biography

Jon Laustsen combines the common building language of construction, model-making and minimalist sculpture,
playfully and thoughtfully exposing bare structures and materials in small-scale that have been said to reflect a continual
"state of transience".

Artist Statement

There is something about "building" which is universal and contradictory… spiritual and political… personal and communal…
constructive and destructive. I have been interested in exploring the spaces between these in an active, instinctive way.

The structural and material world of basic, contemporary construction in the United States is a contextual anchor by which
I explore (through small-scale construction) the more elusive connections between what it means to build, to have built,
why… and what is left behind.

I am currently expanding on early notions of combining simultaneous and shifting perspectives, reflecting and re-shaping the
complexity of interior views. As abstract or literal as an artist may be, it seems the challenge to invent as well as to reflect is a
challenge worth taking.
